Edward's second clue as to his inadequate methods of containment came next, because when the dragonet awoke an hour or so later hungrier than ever, it took precisely six seconds to contort himself in a knot, chew through his leash, and leap aloft with the agility of a startled cat... at which point the wind snatched him away and he was several shiplengths to starboard before he righted himself, backwinged, and dove down into the ocean after a flash of fins.
The third clue was more of a reassurance, as minutes later he was back in his previous sleeping spot, dripping equal parts seawater and blood onto the deck, perched upon the unlucky young shark he had spotted from the deck.
"I am sorry about your rope," he called up to Edward, even as he arranged himself back beside the mast and dragged his meal with him, "Only you see now that it is entirely unnecessary, and I will not run away, unless you insist on tying me up again."
